Physician - Inpatient Psychiatrist

The Psychiatrist applies advanced professional psychiatric diagnostic methods and evidence-based interventions strategies to a full range of patient problems in this work setting. The primary job functions include the provision of direct psychiatric patient care, medication evaluation and management, and consultation services on difficult or complex cases. As a Staff Psychiatrist, the incumbent diagnoses mental disorders, medication evaluation, and management, conducts psychiatric assessments, treats mental disorders through a variety of modalities, and provides adjunctive interventions for treatment of medical disorders. The Staff Psychiatrist functions as a champion and advocate for the provision of recovery focused services to Veterans. As such, the incumbent is expected to model Recovery and its defined values in all aspects of her or his professional activities and partnerships.
The incumbent interacts and works with clinicians from other clinical Services, as a member of a multidisciplinary treatment team. The incumbent is skillful in interpersonal relationships, including conflict resolution and has the ability to work collaboratively with staff from other professions and Services. Attends regular staff meetings of of the Mental Health Service as assigned and those relevant meetings/activities of Tomah VAMC. In addition to basic clinical duties associated with the position, the incumbent performs consultations to other units of the medical center (e. g., General Medicine, Nursing Home Care, inpatient psychiatric units, and the residential treatment programs, etc.). The incumbent is responsible for timely completion of all clinical charting and documentation required by the VAMC for Veterans to whom the incumbent provides services. The incumbent provides education to patients, family members, and significant others regarding relevant psychiatric material. They may also work with medical students and students from other disciplines that are assigned to rotate in their clinical area. The Psychiatrist will perform all other duties assigned by either their Section Manager or Service Chief, even though they may not be outlined above, as long as he or she can do so without violating ethical standards and are approved, credentialed and privileged by the ECMS. The incumbent may be assigned "on call" duties as Psychiatric Officer of the Day (POD).
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 0800 - 1630, Extended hours and emergent situations to include evenings and weekends.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed.
  • Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia.
  • Completion of residency training, or its equivalent, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
  • Proficiency in spoken and written English.

Physical Requirements: Walking, bending, stooping, and some lifting in the direct care of patients. There may also be extended periods of sitting.

Don't Be Fooled

The fraudster will send a check to the victim who has accepted a job. The check can be for multiple reasons such as signing bonus, supplies, etc. The victim will be instructed to deposit the check and use the money for any of these reasons and then instructed to send the remaining funds to the fraudster. The check will bounce and the victim is left responsible.
